Why we read fictional books in English class
Some people from time to time will question the studying of literature, asking why we, at a Seventh-day Adventist Christian school are reading "untrue" material.
This issue has been dealt with quite a bit, and for many years. My guiding principles in choosing literature are delineated in a statement by the Education Department of the General Conference from the 1970s. A summary of the discussion can be found here. Please read this article in full before passing judgment on a particular work of literature.
That said, if anyone is uncomfortable on a personal level with the specific literature we are reading for English class, please talk to me. I am willing to provide alternative assignments on an individual basis. But these matters of conscience are individual; please do not attempt to impose your personal matters of conscience on the class as a whole.
